One of the most common questions I hear from sewing beginners (and even seasoned stitchers!) is: “What fabric should I use for this?”

The answer depends on two things: fabric weight and fabric composition. Choosing the right combo can make the difference between a garment that drapes beautifully and one that ends up stiff, saggy, or just wrong. Let’s break it down by garment type so you can shop (and sew!) with confidence.

I 🧥 Jackets & Coats

Best Weight: Medium to heavy (200–400gsm+)

Best Compositions: Wool, wool blends, heavyweight cotton (like canvas), denim, corduroy, or coated synthetics.

Why: Structure is key. Heavier fabrics offer warmth and shape without sagging. Look for a bit of structure and body, especially for outerwear that needs to hold form.

👗 Dresses

Best Weight: Light to medium (100–250gsm), depending on the style

Best Compositions: Cotton lawn or poplin, viscose/rayon, linen, silk, jersey (for stretch styles)

Why: Flow and drape matter. Lightweight fabrics like viscose offer lovely movement, while poplin adds a crisp finish for more structured silhouettes. Stretch blends are great for bodycon or wrap styles.

👚 Tops & Blouses

Best Weight: Lightweight (60–150gsm)

Best Compositions: Cotton voile, cotton lawn, rayon/viscose, silk, poly crepe, chiffon

Why: Comfort and breathability! For flowing blouses, go for soft drapey fabrics like viscose or silk. For crisp shirts, cotton lawn or poplin works well.

👖 Trousers & Shorts

Best Weight: Medium to heavy (180–300gsm)

Best Compositions: Twill, denim, cotton drill, linen blends, ponte (for stretch), wool suiting

Why: You need a bit of weight and durability—especially for structured styles. Stretch blends are fab for fitted pants or pull-ons.

👕 T-Shirts & Knitwear

Best Weight: Light to medium (120–200gsm)

Best Compositions: Cotton jersey, bamboo jersey, modal, viscose elastane blends

Why: Soft and stretchy is the name of the game. Natural fibres like cotton and bamboo feel great on the skin. Look for a good recovery in stretch fabrics so they bounce back after wear.

👙 Lingerie & Sleepwear

Best Weight: Very lightweight (60–150gsm)

Best Compositions: Silk, cotton lawn, viscose, jersey, mesh, lace

Why: Comfort, breathability, and gentle drape. Lightweight knits are perfect for sleepwear, and stretch lace or mesh is ideal for intimate pieces.

👗 Occasion Wear & Evening Dresses

Best Weight: Light to medium (100–200gsm)

Best Compositions: Satin, crepe, georgette, taffeta, velvet, lace, silk blends

Why: You want glamour and movement. Choose fabrics with a sheen or interesting texture and think about layering or lining if using sheer materials.

🧵 Handy Tip: What is GSM?

GSM = grams per square meter. The higher the GSM, the heavier the fabric. A lightweight cotton might be 110gsm, while a heavy denim could be 400gsm.

Final Sparkle: ✨

The “perfect fabric” depends not just on the pattern, but on how you want your garment to look and feel. If you’re ever unsure, try draping the fabric over your arm or hold it up to the light—it tells you a lot! Or even better, bring your fabric to a live Sewcial Sparkle session, and we’ll decide together 💫
