Oh Scrappy Dapper La La Trousers – My August Scrap-Busting Challenge

This August I joined in with the Scrap-Busting Sewing Challenge hosted by the lovely @cinnamondaisystudio. My fabric scrap bin was overflowing (if I’m honest, I had entire bin bags full!) and I knew it was time to turn them into something fabulous.

So, introducing my Oh Scrappy Dapper La La Trousers!

The challenge brief was simple: make a full garment during August using only fabric scraps from your stash. It’s playful, zero-pressure, and open to all sewists of every level. I decided it was the perfect opportunity to dive in.

The La La Trousers are a beginner-friendly pattern, but still full of thoughtful details to keep experienced sewists happy too. They were designed by the talented Lizzie from @bettysilkstudio (you may know her from The Great British Sewing Bee, Series 9!).

This elasticated waist design is both flattering and comfortable, reducing bulk while working beautifully across all shapes and sizes.

Here’s how I made mine:

• Cut my scraps into 5” squares and stitched them into fabric blocks.

• Used those blocks as my pattern fabric pieces.

• Interlined with a leftover duvet cover from another project.

• Added lots of my favourite labels, satin stitched on my trusty Janome sewing machine.

Then it was just a matter of following the fabulous instructions — and voila! My scrappy, sparkly La La trousers were born.

They’ve quickly become my official “happy sewing trousers”, perfect for days in the sewing room. I love how playful, unique, and joyful they feel — a true scrap transformation.

Don’t forget to sparkle,

✨ Sam
