The Schmetz Hemstitch Needle, also known as a Wing Needle or Sword Needle, is specially designed for decorative sewing techniques including hemstitching, broderie anglaise, and whitework embroidery. The unique wing-shaped blade gently pushes fabric fibres apart as it stitches, creating attractive decorative holes and openwork effects without the need to withdraw threads by hand.
Ideal for use on loosely woven fabrics such as linen, cotton, and lightweight natural fibres, these needles are perfect for heirloom sewing and decorative embellishments. For best results, use decorative stitches, satin stitches, or zigzag stitches to enhance the openwork effect.
Always use a zigzag needle plate with an elongated needle opening and a satin stitch or zigzag foot. If your machine has a hemstitch or twin needle setting, use this feature. Otherwise, reduce the stitch width to prevent the needle from striking the presser foot or needle plate.
